Sell surplus schools such as MLK to the highest bidders as long as some community use is retained
Sell the surplus MLK school to the highest bidder, an independent school such as Bush wants to make a playfield and playground that will also be open to public after school hours. This does not cost the taxpayers anything and gives the neighborhood what they wanted most, a play area. The school... more

It will be a traffic nightmare for us if community center is on same block as bush, bush has a traffic management plan, any public cc will not and it is nowhere in their proposals. These are small residential streets, not arterials.
At least bush will provide continuity and history of being a good neighbor.

I agree with Will, a few people made a lot of noise for their own gain-including the corrupt politicians of the 37th who would rather bankrupt the state than cut spending. I live a few blocks away and that school has always been a problem area. Most of us would rather it be gone! A nice open playarea and field would be most welcome, and being private (with access to community) means it will be safer than the old Harrison school grounds.

It is crazy to spend public money on this, we already have 3 community centers in the area, now they want the school district to take a low bid and lose millions that could go to our schools! Get the high bid, especially if we still get some public use of the property. Tearing that ugly building down would greatly improve our neighborhood.

There is a small group of people that want to control this building for their own political gain, most of us residents would rather have the building torn down and replaced with an open field. The 37th district politicians took away 2.5 million that could have gone to our public schools in order give to some group to help buy this building(which they would not have to bring up to code) and our tax money would have to pay for operating costs year after year.
nemc
do not let the state take 2.5 million dollars and give to a group to buy this dump of a building, that is taking from our public schools and giving to a community group. The highest bidder is offering 4 times the money and will keep some public use,,this is best value for all of us that support the seattle public schools.

finally an idea that doesn't cost us anything. Good one.

I like the idea of playfield, better than an ugly building in my neighborhood.

the SPS should really sell to the highest bidder. In this case Bush is offering 1.35 million MORE than the next highest bidders, and they will keep public access available outside of school hours. This is a great deal for the district, high bid is over 50% higher than 2nd highest, go for it.
freebird
This makes a lot of sense and no public funds are used,,,,, so the school district will probably find a way to sell to lowest bidder that will suck up more of our tax money year after year.
rholmes
Of course take the highest bid! In this case the School district gets great money for that property and the community gets usage also.

this seems sensible.

Concentrate on improving existing schools, not giving money to fix closed ones. The school district needs to get maximum value for old properties, this proposal at least gives something to the community as well as maximizing value.
HB
Yes, we would rather have a play field than anything else, use that money to help upgrade existing schools.

no building=carbon free.....play field all the way
fran
I would hate to see city funds go towards another community center, (especially when that area already has 3 of them), when our schools desperately need the funds.
jjean
why spend public money when we have a private solution, it might not be perfect but it is free to us.
rick
I support the Greenest plan, a play field is better than a big old school that sucks up resources.

That school has always looked bad , an open field would be nice in this neighborhood.
the streets are too small for a community center like they are proposing, no major roads nearby and bus stops are far away.
Anyway, they should take highest bidder.
ohnomi
i agree with any plan to highest bidder, as long as no public money is involved. bush is a good neighbor so this is even better. they won't be dependent on city/state funds every year.
Cal
support the schools, they need all the dollars they can get. they must get all they can for that place, taking low bids is stealing from the public.
