Empower the Immigrant/Refugee population to participate fully in American society by funding programs that teach English as a Second Language.
To address this critical need the next mayor of Seattle should:
1. Help restore funding to ESL programs in our city's Community Colleges.
2. Provide grants and/or scholarships for professional, credentialed training of new ESL teachers and tutors.
3. Energetically support local non-profits who teach ESL classes and train tutors (such as La Raza, Goodwill and St James ESL).
4. Establish a task force to clarify the ESL needs in our city and determine how we can best serve this need.
